Happo-En Garden, Tokyo

Happo-En Garden is located in the place where the suburban residence of Hikozaemon Okubo who was the side secretary of Ieyasu Tokugawa more than 300 years ago (now Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo). In the site of about 5000 square meters, there are Japanese gardens that have been able to see the trees of hundreds of years of age and migratory birds, carefully keeping harmony with nature. There is also the restaurant that is also used for wedding halls and parties.
The name of this garden seems to have been named with the meaning “a beautiful place regardless of wherever you look”.


The Japanese garden, which has a history of about 300 years since the Edo Period, retains its appearance at the time of landscaping. Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, snow scenery in winter and full of natural beauty every season, you can enjoy Japanese garden beauty such as sound of waterfall, carp swimming pond.


If you go through the big gate of Happo-En Garden, there is an urban oasis spreading. It is a place quaint as it is not to be inside the city. There are many wonderful spots in the wide space of Happo-En Garden.


Wandering around the pond, which is also a symbol of Happo-En Garden, from Azumaya (a cottage) standing by the pond, looking at the elegantly swimming colorful Nishikigoi seems to forget that you are in the city center of Tokyo. It is said that there is something good in finding a silver color in the swimming carp.


Basically, this garden is open to the users of facilities of Happo-En Garden such as restaurant etc., free of charge. There is also a tour course walking in the garden to taste matcha and sweets in the tea room, so you can graciously enjoy the garden. There are also “Tokyo Metropolitan Garden Museum” and “Nature Educational Garden” in the immediate vicinity, and many people stop by at the same time.
