“Kenrokuen Garden” is a garden of go round style, which is designated as a special scenic spot of the country in Kanazawa city, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is approximately 11.7 hectares in size, it is one of the three biggest gardens in Japan, along with Korakuen Garden in Okayama City and Kairakuen Garden in Mito city. Kenrokuen Garden was originally used as a garden of Kaga lord. After that, passed down for many generations, repeatedly increased and remodeled, formed in the current garden. The history of the work of the lords of Kaga’s domination made Kenrokuen Garden established.
There are many sights and experiences on the vast site of Kenrokuen Garden. There are places where it is difficult to proceed when using a wheelchair, but at Kenrokuen Garden there is a “universal design course” and a “fluent course” that can be enjoyed casually.
The Universal design course is a course that goes round the Kasumiga-ike Pond and the Kenrokuen Kiku-zakura cherry blossoms. On this course, it is recommended going clockwise. The first highlight is “observation decks”. From the observatory, you can see the Sea of Japan and the Noto Peninsula, you can see Kaga plain, Utatsuyama in front of it and the city area. The fluent course is a course that can be enjoyed all over the garden. This course is long and it is hard to walk, but if you get tired you can use a rest area that is available in the garden. In this course, there are plenty of points to be highlighted, such as “Plum Grove”, “Shigure-tei” (tea room), “Jade Falls”, “Yugao-tei” (tea room) and “Fountain”.

It is a typical garden which leaves the feature of the strolling-style landscape garden of the Edo period at today. Gardening started in 1676 and spent about 180 years.
According to the ancient Chinese book of gardens, there should be six different sublime qualities to which a garden can aspire. Grouped in their traditional complementary pairs, they are spaciousness & seclusion, artifice & antiquity, water-courses & panoramas. The name “Kenroku-en” literally means “garden that combines six characteristics”
Kanazawa where Hokuriku Shinkansen is also newly opened for traffic and popularity is increasing as a travel destination. Kenroku-en Garden representing such Kanazawa is a typical garden of the Edo period, and the extent of it is about 110,000 square meters.
You can enjoy beautiful scenery every season like the cherry trees in spring, the green trees in summer, the colored leaves in autumn, and the Yuki-tsuri(*) in winter. Since it is a district with much snow, especially Yuki-tsuri of winter is popular, but the beautiful colored leaves of autumn are also very popular.
* The act of lifting the branches of trees to prevent them from breaking due to accumulated snow.
The lighting up will be performed from the middle of November to early in December when it becomes the best time to see of autumnal leaves. It is 17:30~21:00 at time of lighting it up. Usually, you need to pay an entrance fee within opening time, but the time zone of lighting it up can enter for free. (It is the information as of 2016.
