Mt. Takao is located in Hachioji City, Tokyo. The annual number of climbers is about 3 million, the highest in the world.
In addition to its natural charm, it also has a well-developed mountain trail and a tourist facility that extends from the foothills to the summit.
“Mt. Takao” in Hachioji City, Tokyo, is one of the representative mountains in Tokyo that can be reached by train from Shinjuku in about an hour. Located in the southeast of the Kanto Mountains, it is designated as Meiji-no-mori Takao Quasi-National Park.
The altitude is relatively low at 599 meters, so it has been popular with many people because it is easy to climb and enjoy the seasonal nature. In particular, its popularity has soared since winning three stars in the Michelin Green Guide. It is gaining popularity both in Japan and overseas, both young and old.
Mt. Takao is famous as a mountain where children and adults can climb. There may be many people who have the impression that even beginners have low difficulty climbing mountains.
On the other hand, there are climbers who visit Mt. Takao as a training place to climb Mt. Fuji and other difficult mountains. A little surprising. Mt. Takao is a place where you can easily go sightseeing and enjoy full-scale mountain climbing. One of the reasons for its popularity is the wide variety of mountain climbing courses.
There are a total of 8 climbing courses on Mt. Takao, from low to high difficulty. In the middle of the course, there are many exciting points such as swamps and suspension bridges.
There is a cable car and a lift platform at the foot of the mountain (201 meters above sea level), the starting point for mountain climbing. By using these, even small children and seniors can easily go to the middle. The view from the cable car and lift is also quite good. The steepest slope of the cable car is 31 degrees 18 minutes. This is the hardest in Japan for cable car slopes. As a bodily sensation, it feels more abrupt and it feels as if you are climbing up the cliff almost vertically. There are lots of fun elements, such as tracks surrounded by forests, approaching steep slopes, and the moment when the up and down trains pass each other.
Mt. Takao, where natural forests remain, is home to a variety of plants, animals and insects. Feel the quiet forest air and breathing of animals while enjoying the mountain climbing.
Mt. Takao is a popular sightseeing spot where you can enjoy the beautiful air and the magnificent scenery overlooking Tokyo with only 1 hour from the city center with easy access. Mt. Takao is a world-proud mountain that French guide book “Michelin Green Guide Japon” posted as three stars. On sunny days, you can enjoy a magnificent view overlooking Mount Fuji from the top of the mountain. It is a paradise where you can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves in autumn, and beer in summer.
When you get on Keio Electric Rail from Shinjuku, you will arrive at the Takaosanguchi Station in about an hour. From the Takaosanguchi station building that received the Good Design Award of 2016, there is a cable car Kiyotaki Station about 5 minutes on foot. It will arrive at the Takaosan station which is 472 meters high in about 6 minutes.
From the foot of the mountain to the Takaoyama station there are three ways: cable car, lift, walking. It takes about 12 minutes for lift, about 1 hour for walking. The shortest route is a cable car in about 6 minutes.
There are six walking courses with different climbing difficulty levels from the Takaosan station. The main route is Route 1 (Omotesando course).
The attraction of this route is also a lot of highlights. There are lots of spots that you want to stop by, such as the “Takao Monkey Park and Wild Plant Garden” and “Octopus Japanese Cedar”, so you can climb fun without getting tired of it. It is “Octopus Japanese Cedar” to meet first, as soon as you start walking. Roots are like feet of octopus. It seems that age is about 450 years old.
There are also breaks, photo spots, benches and so on, which is easy for mountaineering beginners.
The course goes through the precincts of Yakuo-in Temple and goes to the summit. From Yakuo-in Temple to the top is a little further down the road. You can go slowly with the trees along the street, enjoying nature.
The summit is a natural park, and it is crowded with lots of people in the season of cherry-blossom viewing and autumn leaves. In the center of the park, there is the Takao Visitor Center, where you can get detailed information on events, animals and plants, etc.
