Yoshiaki Katou built the Matsuyama-jo castle which rises up in the Matsuyama-shi central part of Ehime prefecture from 1602 to about 26 years. Matsuyama-jo Castle which greeted construction of a castle 400 years is said to be hirayamajo (flatland-mountain castle) having best renritsu style tenshu (tower grouping) superior in the function of offense and defense in Japan.
Although the castle tower and the building of others many were burned down by the thunderbolt in 1784, it was rebuilt after that in 1854 and has continued up to today.

The last perfect castle architecture

The Matsuyama-jo castle is one of the existing 12 main towers, and is counted in Japan’s three biggest hirayamajo and Japan’s three biggest renritsu style hirayamajo. The main tower is the last perfect castle architecture of the Edo period.

Matsumoto-jo Castle

Very elegant appearance

Matsumoto Castle which is a symbol of Matsumoto in Nagano. This beautiful castle of the comparison of the black and white shows a very elegant appearance backed by the Northern Alps. Takeda-jo Castle Ruins

Japan’s leading ruins of a mountain castle

The Takeda-jo Castle Ruins is on the west of Takeda Station, the mountaintop of Kojo-san of 353m above sea level. Tradition says that Sozen Yamana built it over 13 years in 1443, and it became the castle of the magnificent stone wall heaping up like now until around 1600. On the site of castle, which is said to be Japan’s leading ruins of a mountain castle, the stone wall, which measures 100 meters from east to west and 400 meters from south to north, are left now, and conveys distinguished air of the past.

400 years have passed after that’s abandoned, but the stone wall is left as it was, and it is a Japan’s leading scale in the existing mountain castle. Japanese oldest style castle tower exists

“National treasure Inuyama-jo Castle” is built in 1537 of the Muromachi era, and the Japanese oldest style that a castle tower exists. It is called a popular name “the White Imperial Castle”. The view from the castle tower which was built on the slightly elevated mountains of bank of Kisogawa is a superb view. In the castle town in front of it, there is the samurai residence letting you feel the history, the Karakuri (gimmick) pavilion and the history museum, so you can enjoy walk.

It is only 5 castles having been designated as a national treasure in the whole country, including this Inuyama-jo Castle with Matsumoto-jo Castle, Himeji-jo Castle, Hikone-jo Castle and Matsue-jo Castle (at 2016).
It is in the limelight nationwide as a precious castle. Inuyama-jo Castle which had escaped war damage, and left from old times, was built by Nobuyasu Oda who was an uncle of Nobunaga Oda.(*)

The largest wooden building in Okinawa

Shuri-jo Castle is the largest wooden building in Okinawa, and it is on the hill with the fine view of Naha-shi Shuri. It is the original Ryukyu architecture that mixed things from China and Japanese in accord with the climate of Okinawa.
It is unknown when this castle was founded, but according to a result of excavation, it is thought that it existed between the end of 13th century and the 14th century.

To respect courtesy

When you climb the gentle slope, it is Shurei-Mon to show at first. “Shurei” means “to respect courtesy”, the words are written as “Shurei no Kuni” (the country of Shurei) on the gate. It is the excellent design of the gate among many others. It was destroyed by war, and restored to the original state in 1958. The beautiful castle and Kankai-Mon gate are seen when you pass Shurei-Mon. In the Ryukyu kingdom period, the messenger of the Chinese emperor was invited to Shuri-jo Castle, it is said that had a meaning of “welcome a party” in this gate. The style that carried a wooden tower on the arch-formed gate made of the limestone, which strongly received influence of the Chinese culture, is architecture only in Okinawa.
