Although there are a number of tourist spots in Japan with flowers, Furano’s lavender field is one of the most famous spots for summer flowers. And when it comes to lavender fields in Furano, “Farm Tomita” is the name to say.
It is a flower garden representing Furano where 80 kinds of flowers centering on lavender color the gentle hills. There are 12 flower gardens in the park where you can enjoy flowers from spring to autumn. There are also shops such as lavender goods, soft ice cream, and sweets, so you can enjoy it all day. There are various facilities in the park such as “Tomita Tadao Memorial Room” introducing the history of the founder and “Hanabito no Ie” with original goods.
Lavender is planted in Furano region, and early-flowering varieties bloom after the end of June. Late-flowering varieties bloom after the beginning of July, and the best time is from mid to late. If you visit, the middle of July is the best time to see it from July 10th to 25th. Since it will be harvested everywhere in August, it is safe to watch until the end of July at the latest.
In addition to lavender, there are various flowers such as poppy and salvia, and you can see a beautiful flower field from spring to autumn.
It is about 45 minutes from Asahikawa Airport by car, 5 minutes from Nakafurano Station of Japan Railway, and 7 minutes on foot from Lavender Field Station of Japan Railway, which stops only the temporary train “Norokko”.
The cultivation area of lavender was about 15 hectares
“Farm Tomita” is a lavender field in Nakafurano Town adjacent to Furano City. It is a popular spot where about 1 million tourists rush every year to see the largest lavender field in Japan. The history of Farm Tomita began around 1958. The flower garden that was one at the beginning has also been expanded gradually. Today, there are seven in total, including “Lavender East” a little further away. The cultivation area of lavender was about 15 hectares, it became the largest scale in Japan.
The petals bloom is the most vivid
“Farm Tomita” cultivates 4 kinds of lavender with different timing and characteristics of the viewing time. As for the kind “Noshi Hayazaki” (Lavandula angustifolia), which will have its earliest appearance, from around the end of June to the middle of July is best time to see. As the name suggests, it is characterized by deep purple color, the state of “bud” before the petals bloom is the most vivid. Since the length of “ears” is also short, in the field the flowers are densely packed and become a carpet of purple.
The purple color appears to be darker
The site of Farm Tomita is a gentle hill as a whole, and you can see a lavender field spreading along the slope as you look from the underside of the hill. As you climb the hill, you can appreciate it at an angle that looks down at the lavender, the purple color appears to be darker because the stem portion is hidden by flowers. You can also see the scenery of Furano plain and Mt. Tokachidake, which you can see on the elevated line of sight. The “Traditional Lavender Field” and the “Field of Forest Color” are in a particularly high place, so if you want to see it you need to climb up.
The scent of lavender spreads well around
Lavender is also useful as a perfume so it’s better not only to see but also to enjoy the fragrance. The “Distillation House” is Japan’s only extraction factory distilling lavender oil. You can enjoy the fragrance just by getting close to the field, but when the lid of the distiller is opened, the scent of lavender spreads well around. It seems that distillation work is done from the beginning of July to the middle of August here.
The fields seasonal flowers were cultivated
Not only lavender fields can be enjoyed in the Farm Tomita. More than 80 kinds of flowers are cultivated here. For example, it is the “Farm of Hanabito” that all the sceen of farm that you could see at first. The perennial marigold etc. are also planted so that you can enjoy from spring to autumn. There are also other fields where seasonal flowers were cultivated, it is recommended.
