Itoshima is a peninsula located in the northwestern part of Fukuoka prefecture. Although it is easy to be misunderstood from the name, Itoshima is not the island but the name of the city. While it is only 30 minutes by car from the center of Fukuoka city, the Itoshima Peninsula facing the Genkai-Nada Sea has a beautiful coastline and rich nature spreads. There are many things you can only meet here, such as a cafe where you can see beautiful sunsets, delicious food using ingredients from Itoshima, unique craft miscellaneous goods. It is a very attractive spot that you want to go many times.
Itoshima is a sightseeing spot, but its attraction is slightly different from other tourist destinations. Even looking around the station there are no souvenir shops or anything and you can not find something like a sightseeing spot when walking around the station.
So what kind of stuff like Itoshima sightseeing is like?
For example it is an emerald green ocean, a mountain covered with lush trees, a fashionable Café and restaurant, a shrine and a temple that has accumulated a long history. Or, it may be many studio, made by artists who have emigrated from all over the country, including various places in Fukuoka prefecture.

Japan’s Top 100 Setting sun

Sakurai-Futamigaura is a natural beauty spot of Fukuoka, and it is selected as “Japan’s Top 100 Nagisa (beach)” and “Japan’s Top 100 Setting sun”. It is famous as the setting sun of Chikuzen-Futamigaura for the morning sun of Futamigaura of Ise, and the scenery of the setting sun sinking between Meotoiwa Rock (the rocks like a married couple) in the summer solstice is special.

The Shime-nawa, tied up to the Meotoiwa rock

In addition, the Shime-nawa(*) as for 30m in length, 1t in weight, is tied up to the Meotoiwa rock, and it is replaced with new one in the “Meotoiwa rock Shime-nawa festival” which is held every year on the day of the flood tide of from April to May.
* A thick rope used as a ceremonial implement of shrines which indicates the boundary between the holy area and the everyday area.

Japan’s three biggest Genbudo Cave

Keya no Oto, which is a huge cave of 64m in height, 90m in depth, 10m in width, is located at the west end of the north of Itoshima-shi, and it is designated in one of Japan’s three biggest Genbudo Cave (basalt cave).
You can see the beautiful hexagon pillar shape stone which is designated as national monuments in a top shop of the entrance of the cave.

Japan’s 100 Best Beaches with White Sand and Blue Pine

In Nigi no Hama, sandy beach and Matsubara (a field with pine trees) shaped like an arch spread out for approximately 6km, is chosen as “Japan’s 100 Best Beaches with White Sand and Blue Pine”. Since beautiful view and good water quality, it gain popularity in the summer as a beach, in autumn and spring as the place taking a walk through the shore.
