Kamogawa Kawayuka (Riverside Summer Terrace Dining), Kyoto

“Kamogawa Noryo-yuka” (Riverside Summer Terrace Dining) is a summer tradition in Kyoto. While enjoying the cool river breeze and the beautiful night light, you will definitely want to experience “Noryo-yuka” where you can enjoy delicious meals made by craftsmen. Recently, the number of table seats “Noryo-yuka” has increased, so let’s go there.
Seats are set up on the river surface every year during the hot months from May to September. At the seat facing the river, you can enjoy various meals while feeling the coolness outside. There are many “Kaiseki ryori” (formally arranged dinner to enjoy sake) mainly in Japan, but of course you can enjoy various dishes.
For example, Starbucks, a coffee chain store that you are familiar with. You can also enjoy “Noryo-yuka” here. Some stores that have “Noryo-yuka” require a table charge, but Starbucks is free. For this reason, it is not uncommon to have a long line on weekends. Coffee to drink while blowing in a cool breeze is exceptional.
The standard of “Noryo-yuka” is unified, but each store has its own interior design, so the atmosphere is different for each store. One of the attractions is that there are many choices.
In “Noryo-yuka”, you can enjoy events around Kamogawa while enjoying eating and drinking. There are events such as “Kyo no Tanabata” and “Gozan Okuribi” during the period of “Noryo-yuka”, so it is recommended to visit at the right time. If you want to see the event from “Noryo-yuka”, make a reservation early. There are also travel agencies that organize tours to observe events while eating and drinking at “Noryo-yuka”, so you can join it.

“Kamogawa Noryo-yuka” (the cool floor of Kamo River) famous as the summer scenes of Kyoto Gion. “Kawa-yuka” (floor on the river) is made on Misogi River which flows just beside Kamo River, and it is a big event that you can enjoy eating while watching Kamo River. It is set every year between May and September, about 100 restaurants in the section from the Gojo Street to the Nijo Street, and is crowded with many people.

A simple eating and drinking space was created in shallow waters of the river

The history of “Kamogawa Noryo-yuka” began in the Edo period. Early in the Edo period, the riverside of Kamo River was a entertainment district where you can enjoy Kabuki dance and so many people were visiting. Over time, eating and drinking stores targeting people who came to visit increased, and a simple eating and drinking space was created in shallow waters of the river. This is the beginning of Kawayuka.

It is open only in the evening from June to August

The popular spot of Kawayuka of Kamo River is between Nijo and Gojo. In addition, this interval is divided into 4 areas. From Nijo to Sanjo is “Kamikiyamachi” area, from Sanjo to Sijo is “Pontocho” area, from Sijo to Donguri Bridge is “Saiseki” area, and from Donguri Bridge to Gojo is “Shimokiyamachi” area. Many stores open “Yuka” during the day in May and September, but since June, July, August there are concerns about food poisoning due to heat, it is open only in the evening.

Every area has a well-established high-class restaurant. There is a restaurant that covers about 15,000 yen in evening course cuisine, but even in such restaurants, plans for about 3,000 yen to 5,000 yen are prepared in the daytime. In addition, in every area, there are many stores that prepared reasonably priced plans of 2,000 yen to 3,000 yen during the day and 5,000 yen to 8,000 yen at night. You can choose not only Kyo kaiseki (Kyoto’s traditional local cuisine), but also Tofu and Yuba dishes, fish dishes, Italian, Chinese cuisine according to your preference.
