Sengokuhara, which extends north of Ashinoko, is a relatively new hot spring sightseeing spot in Hakone. It has been developed as “Sengokuhara Hot Spring Resort” by drawning large-scale hot water from Ubako and Ohwakudani, and is now known as a luxury resort. For this reason, there are many fashionable art galleries in the vicinity of Sengokuhara, such as the Hakone Lalique Museum, the Pola Museum of Art, and the Hakone Garasu no Mori Museum of Art.
These museums offer common tickets, advance tickets, and free tickets such as a free pass for traveling around Hakone, so be sure to check them out before you visit Sengokuhara. In Sengokuhara, which was originally a swamp and grassland, it is also recommended to visit nature. Japanese pampas grass field, which is the best hiking spot in Hakone where you can enjoy seasonal flowers, is a classic sightseeing in Sengokuhara
A vast pampas grass field spreads out at the foot of the branch peak of Mount Hakone. If you get off at the Sengoku Kogen bus stop, there is a straight road that runs through the pampas grass plain. Hikers walking along the pampas grass plain can also be seen from the main road.
The best time to see pampas grass is from late September to late November. From the end of September to the beginning of October, you can enjoy the two-colored grassland scenery where green ears and white ears are mixed at the turn of the season from summer to autumn. From mid-October to mid-November, you can see the golden pampas grass shining in the sun at the best time.
Of course, autumn is the recommended season for sightseeing. It seems that pampas grass with cotton wool is waving every time a wind blows, and it seems to be in the golden sea. Of course, walking on the green grass plain in summer is refreshing and pleasant.
Another major attraction is “noyaki” (open burning), which takes place from mid to late March. If you visit Hakone Sengokuhara during this period, you can see the flame of noyaki spreading through the pampas grass plain, literally like wildfire.

Sengokuhara Japanese Pampas Plateau is a short walk away.
“Sengokuhara” is a 700-meter altitude spreading at the foot of the south of Mt. Kintoki located in Hakone. Long time ago, it was a crater lake which was also connected to Lake Ashino, but it became wetland later. It seems that the cultivation was tried several times in the Edo period, but it seems that it did not go well, “Susuki” (Japanese pampas grass) which is the material of the roof was kept cultivated. It is a grassland that has finished its role as a result of the elimination of the demand of the Susuki, but now it has become a place where the spotlight will be restored as a sightseeing spot.
“Sengokuhara Japanese Pampas Plateau” is a sightseeing spot of Susuki boasting the largest scale in Kanto region. At the foot of Mt. Daiga-dake, the scene of golden ears sprinkling has become a Hakone autumn tradition. The beauty is so chosen as “the fifty scenic spots of Kanagawa” and “the hundred scenic spots of Kanagawa’s flowers”. Many people visit for the walk from the end of September to the middle of November when the best season comes.
Susuki is a good thing to enjoy for a long period until it turns brown into the early winter. Each period has beauty and you will want to visit many times. In the Susuki steppes in August, the ear is just out and the green is beautiful. As autumn gets deeper, ears will open and change to a fantastic golden grassy grassland. And from the end of October to the middle of November, the whole grass is colored gold and the shining sparkling light of the sun is an unforgettable splendor.
The big feature of “Sengokuhara Japanese Pampas Plateau” is a walking path extending straight in the center. Because it is a single road, there is no worry of getting lost and you can enjoy Susuki plain unexpectedly. The length of the walking path is about 700 meters, so even if you walk to the end point, the round trip time will be around 30 minutes. Because the walking path is not paved, big stones are scattered. Always prepare shoes that are easy to walk on. Sengokuhara at an altitude of about 700 meters is cool, and as autumn deepens, it cools down in the morning and evening. It is safe to take measures against cold weather.
When you climb to the top of the walking path, there is a tag for “the endpoint of the boardwalk”, where the road is over. After that, you will return the same road, but it is wonderful to descend while watching Mt. Hakone and mountains around 1,000 meters in height and Susuki shining brightly.
Japanese Pampas Plateau and walking trails are crowded during the best season. Especially Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, it is better to visit as early in the morning as possible.
Speaking of the must-see spot of autumn of Hakone, it is Japanese pampas of Sengokuhara.
The foot northwest of Mt. Daiga in the Sengokuhara area is the prairie of Japanese pampas. There, the beautiful scenery where golden ears sway on the whole surface in autumn has become famous.
The “Sengokuhara Japanese Pampas Plateau” is colored at the same time in autumn, like a golden sea. Since there is a promenade, it is also recommended to walk in Japanese pampas. The fantastic scenery will surely be unforgettable once you see it. Since the promenade is not paved, please take a walk with easy walking shoes.
In Sengokubara, open burning of Japanese pampas is conducted on the day which does not have a wind in March every year. This is to prevent the tree from invading the Japanese pampas plateau and becoming a trivial woods forest. The whole of Japanese pampas plateau is surrounded by a red flame, and it is very powerful, and many tourists come every year to see the sight.
One walk way continues in the center of a prairie. On both sides of the way, the Japanese pampas grass being as tall as grown-up’s height is shaking flickeringly, and it will be overwhelmed by the force if it sees from a short distance.
“Japanese pampas grass” is a perennial herbaceous plant of the department of a rice, and the leaf and the stalk were used as roofing member a long time ago. In the Sengokuhara district of Hakone, it seems that they raised the Japanese pampas grass for roofs and used it as a source of life.
A time changes and, now, many tourists came to visit to see golden Japanese pampas grass.
