“Shirahama Onsen” in the southwestern part of Kii Peninsula is also called “Nanki Shirahama Onsen” to distinguish it from “Shirahama Onsen” in Minami Boso, Chiba Prefecture. The history is old and goes back to the times of “Nihonshoki”(Chronicles of Japan) and “Manyo-shu” (the oldest anthology of tanka). Shirahama Airport is also nearby, and from Shin-Osaka Station on the Shinkansen, it takes about two and a half hours by the “Kinokuni Line” express.
According to “Nippon Shoki”, Emperor Saimei in 658, Emperor Jito in 690, and Emperor Monmu in 701 are said to have visited “Muronoyu Hot Spring” which is the current Nanki Shirahama Onsen. Shirahama Onsen, which was sung in “Manyo-shu,” is also called one of the “Japanese three Old Hot Springs”, along with Dogo Onsen in Ehime Prefecture and Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture. Furthermore, along with Atami Onsen and Beppu Onsen, it has also been called Japan’s Three Great Onsen.
Shirahama Onsen is a hot spring resort divided into seven regions, not one source. Shirarahama, which had a friendly relationship with Honolulu, Hawaii in 2000, is, of course, a great place to swim. Aside from being able to comfortably swim in the sea, “Shirasuna” among several hot spring communal “baths” is a mixed hot spring on the beach. Of course you can come in with your swimsuit on and enjoy the sea bathing and hot spring at the same time.
It is Shirahama Onsen where you can enjoy the sea bathing and hot spring at the same time, but it is good to taste the taste of the trip at the inn located in the hot spring area.
There is a large hotel in the south of Shirahama Beach, but you can use only the hot spring without staying.
Just south of Shirahama Beach, there is “Muronoyu Hot Spring”, which takes over the name of an ancient hot spring. The buildings also have a taste, but you can try the difference in spring quality at one time because there are two sources.
From Muronoyu Hot Spring go west through the harbor and there is Sakinoyu Hot Spring with an open-air bath. As the name suggests, this communal bath is in the foothills, and the outdoor bath will almost feel connected to the sea. As it is a sulfur spring, it is exceptional to take a bath while taking in the smell of sulfur and the smell of the nearby sea tide. Both Muronoyu Hot Spring and Sakinoyu Hot Spring are hot springs with roots during the “Manyo-shu” era, so it can be said that the “history” of Shirahama Onsen is here.

It is a representative resort of Kansai area

Shirahama Onsen Hot Spring, one of Japan’s three major hot springs, known as a hot spring spot for a long time. This is also one of the geosites of “Nanki Kumano Geopark” certified in Japan Geopark in 2014. There, you can taste the grace of the eternal earth on your whole body while immersing in a hot spring.
