The Kerama Islands are about 40 kilometers west of Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. The world’s most transparent ocean is called “Kerama Blue” and attracts people all over the world. Located in the center of such Kerama Islands, it is Zamami Island where you can experience the beautiful beaches and the island’s rustic charm.
The Kerama Islands are made up of over 20 large and small islands. Designated as the 31st National Park in 2014, it is a popular area visited by many tourists from home and abroad regardless of the season. Among them, Zamami Island is located in the center of the Kerama Islands and is the most populated and central island.
To Zamami Island, use a high-speed boat (adult round trip 5,970 yen, child round trip 2,990 yen) or a ferry (adult round trip 4,030 yen, child round trip 2,020 yen) from Tomari port in Naha city. It takes about 50 minutes by high-speed boat and about 2 hours by ferry. There are many tourists who visit Zamami Island casually while staying on the main island of Okinawa because they can enjoy it even on a day trip.
A large number of whales come around Zamami Island every year from January to March in search of the warm sea. Zamami Port, which is the base of whale watching, has whale monuments and welcomes travelers.
It is possible to buy tickets and board on the day of the high-speed ship and ferry if there is space available, but the reservation will be filled immediately for consecutive holidays and summer months. It’s a good idea to make a reservation as soon as your travel schedule is decided.
After a few minutes walk from Zamami Port Arrival, you will reach the center of Zamami village, where hotels, guest houses and marine shops are all lined up. Not only travelers but also many people on the island come and go because the village office and shops are also available.
Visit Furuzami Beach, which is rated 2 stars by the French travel guide “Michelin Green Guide Japon”. However, it takes about 5 minutes by a village bus from Zamami port to the beach, and it is a 20-minute walk. Even though the sidewalks are complete, you need to be careful when walking as they will cross hills.
The beach is made up of beautiful white coral sands and various layers of sea blue. The dark part seen in the sea is the area where corals are crowded. There are many tropical fish here.
Several rental shops are open at the entrance of Furuzami Beach. The beach is exposed to direct sunlight and beach umbrellas are essential. Marine goods such as snorkel sets are also available, so please use them when entering the sea. You can see amazingly many tropical fish and corals just a few meters from the beach.
